COOL ROOFS & ENERGY EFFICIENCY
 Over the past 5 years, the installation of Cool Roofs has become the single largest trend in roofing industry. Due to increasing population and energy consumption, environmental concerns, energy shortages and vastly improved life cycle costing, Cool Roofing is finally receiving the attention it deserves. As a leader in environmental design and cool roof technology, APOC expends substantial resources on improving current cool roofing products as well as developing new Cool Roof technologies. OVERVIEW & BENEFITS OF COOL ROOFS
While many low slope roofs have a variety of surface colors such as off-whites, aluminum/silver, or light-colored granules, none of these finishes can be considered a "cool roof" by today's higher standards.
In order to comply with Energy Star® and Cool Roof Rating Council® standards, the minimum reflectivity needs to be at least 70%. Only continuous white or shades of white-such as off-white or cream color-can meet these reflectivity standards.
Typically, a beige-colored gravel roof, white shingle granules, and even the silver sheen of an aluminized roof only reflect up to a maximum of ± 65% of the sun's light-and therefore cannot meet the new standards.
White granules are not as effective as continuous white or light colors, as there are usually small black asphalt spots adjacent to a granule particle, and because they can create shadows depending on the angle of light and size of the granule. Thus the reflectivity of granule surfaces is far below the 70% minimum reflectivity standards for a "cool roof."
APOC offers many roof restoration systems that meet both Energy Star and Cool Roof Rating Council standards. Many of these systems specify APOC #252 white elastomeric coating, which has been tested by independent laboratories with reflectivity above 90%. APOC #252 also exceeds emissivity standards for cool roofs as defined by the Cool Roof Rating Council.
